At approximately 9:50 a.m. Thursday, April 14, 2022, Spokane Fire Department (SFD) Engine 6 was dispatched to the 1800 W 7th Ave block to investigate an undetermined smoke odor. Engine 6 arrived on the scene to find a large 2-story house converted into 7 apartments. Light smoke was visible outside, along with audible smoke alarms. Based on outside observation and audible alarms, Engine 6 requested full alarm assignment to summon four additional engine companies, 2 ladder trucks and 2 command staff officers.

Upon entering the structure, Engine 6 encountered zero-visibility smoke conditions on the second floor and ensured full evacuation of the occupants. Subsequently arriving SFD units extinguished the fire, vented the structure of smoke, and thoroughly searched all areas of the structure for possible occupants or casualties.

The fire was contained to a second-floor unit within 10 minutes of arriving. It appeared that the fire had been burning for a long time, causing severe smoke damage to the upper floors.

No civilians or firefighters were injured, and the American Red Cross was providing housing for three adults.
